Natural Art

Did you know that some artists only make art with natural materials? Research artists like Andy Goldsworthy and Nils-Udo as well as the art of Mosaiculture to see how natural materials like sticks, ice and rocks can be shaped into wonderful works of art and even structures.

Collect sticks and other natural materials and design and build a Bush Cubby or hideout to play in. Consider how you will make it structurally sound and safe to use. How will you use different materials together? What shapes are best for building cubby houses? What materials can be used to decorate or personalise your cubby?

Extension: Plant and grow climbing plants around your cubby to transform it into a living sculpture!

Natural Art

Did you know that some artists only make art with natural materials? Research British artist Andy Goldsworthy and German artist Nils-Udo and explore how they make different shapes and structures by using only natural resources. Collect different shaped leaves, petals and small branches (we must be careful to protect trees, plants and flowers that are still growing, so only use leaves and petals that have fallen!). Hang your leaves with pegs on a line of string positioning them next to a sunny window or lamp to cast a shadow. Sketch or shade over the shadows and use a tablet sketch application to transfer the patterns. What fine details do you notice when recreating leaf skeletons?

Use your leaf patterns, petals and other natural materials such as rocks, sticks or seeds to create some beautiful natural artwork.

With your class or your friends, create a natural art gallery with all your artworks and invite another class or your families to visit.

Create some exhibit tickets and posters to advertise your gallery!
